"Your craftsmanship and woodworking skills are spectacular, Andy. After seeing this, I wish you'd build all my designs. The work and thought you have put into this project is evident in every single piece. Thank you for doing the Evil Twin so proud, I could not be happier. Enjoy! Aloha. Clayton"
Making has always been my passion. As a child I was usually happiest when surrounded by cardboard, scissors, sellotape, glue, paint, music and possibilities. Then I moved onto wood, hammering together bits of plywood and 4x2's into ramps to see how far we could make our skateboards fly. In my first year of school sewing class I made Big Bear which was not only my first step into the world of power tools, but also the first time I remember feeling proud of something I'd made, despite his mismatched legs and floppy arm.
My twenties and thirties were spent as a graphic designer, producing a wide range of work including surf clothing designs (Headworx, Tadpole) a number of national magazines (DVD Monthly, PURE PSP) and books and annuals (Star Wars, WWE wrestling, Dreamworks) and while I enjoyed this career,
I missed being hands on. I missed tools. A new house gave me the opportunity to finally have the workshop I'd always dreamed of and I began to learn woodworking by making furniture, taught by Youtube and the wonderful online woodworking community.
Once the house was full I moved onto my next project, a box. Items from my childhood were dotted around my parents home; first pair of shoes, photos, playschool diaries, certificates, awards etc and I wanted somewhere to keep them safe. I shared some photos of the box on social media and the reaction was quite overwhelming. It really seemed to connect with people and orders started coming in. So it seems I'm now back to where I started, making things while listening to music. Nothing's really changed since I was a child except I now have better tools and tunes.
"I made my things because they weren't there.
I knew that if I didn't make them they would never be here
and I very much want them to be here"
